Dis (Disir)

Dis (Disir)

In the Scandinavian-Germanic mythology, dís are supernatural beings, divine maidens, who appear either as guardian spirits or as hostile forces. The Scandinavian dís, as well as the Germanic idis, itis, literally translates as "mistress".Rudolf Simek considers them analogous to the Celtic and Germanic matrons. Supposedly, they were originally guardian spirits, goddesses of fertility. The feast in honor of dis was celebrated at the beginning of winter or at the vernal equinox.
