Well into the 19th century, indigenous craftsmen were still making matchlocks, rather than the more complicated wheellocks and flintlocks, because they were easier and cheaper to produce. Indian gunmakers were no strangers to intricate decoration, and produced some very ornate pieces using ivory, bone, and precious metals as inlays.
