Jormungandr

Jormungandr

Jormungand, "the giant's staff", also called Midgardsorm, is a sea serpent from Norse mythology, the third son of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. He is the counterpart of the Greek Ouroboros. According to the "Younger Edda," Odin took Loki's three children, Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungand, whom he threw into the ocean surrounding Midgard. The serpent grew so huge that it encircled the entire Earth and clung to its own tail. Because of this Yormungand was nicknamed "The Serpent of Midgard" or "The World Serpent". In Ragnarök (the final battle of the gods) Midgardsorm and Thor, being eternal enemies, kill each other.
