Las Meninas, Diego Velázquez
Las Meninas is a 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. Is an incredibly nuanced depiction of life in the court of King Philip IV of Spain. Perhaps one of the most important paintings in all of Western art history. The large canvas shows Infanta Margaret Theresa, the king's daughter, surrounded by her entourage as Velázquez stands behind an easel painting her portrait. The title, which translates to Ladies in Waiting.
