Potoo

Potoo

Potoos are a group of birds related to the nightjars and frogmouths. During the day, they perch almost completely still with their eyes closed on the ends of dead branches or tree stumps. This behaviour combined with their tree-like plumage makes them so well camouflaged that it is almost impossible to spot them. In Maya mythology, potoos were viewed as an omen of change, auspicious or not, and staring into their eyes for too long would wreak the wrath of the gods.
