Struthiomimus (Cretaceous)

Struthiomimus is a genus of ornithomimid dinosaurs from the late Cretaceous. Superficially, it looked like gigantic ostrich. Its first fossils fragments were recovered in 1901 on the Dinosaur Provincial Park territory. However, in 1914 a complete skeleton was unearthed by American Museum of Natural History scientist in Alberta, Canada.
Struthiomimus name means “ostrich mimic”. Apart from ostrich appearance, Struthiomimus had the similar internal structure. It was bipedal dinosaur with toothless beak. Struthiomimus was 4.3 metres long and weighed about 150 kilograms. It had long neck and small head with large eyes. Its tail was relatively stiff and probably used for balance. Forelimbs ended up with three equal toes resembling a sloth arms. Hind limbs were well-fitted for rapid running at a speed between 50 to 80 km/h.
It was an omnivorous animal. Its diet included seeds, fruits, plants, insects and even flesh. Due to lack of teeth Struthiomimus had to swallow stones for better digestion.
