European swords (1000-1500)
Among the types of swords used in the medieval period were broadsword, arming sword, falchion, longsword, rapier, sabre and shortsword among others. Swords were typically used occasionally and that only when the mounted cavalry had to engage in close combat or on such rare cases when the infantry used swords as a primary weapon. (1- Italian rapier; 2- Probably Italian or Spanish thrusting sword ca. 1500; 3- Italian sword ca.1500; 4- western european sword, ca. 1450).
