United States Capitol

United States Capitol

The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress and the seat of the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. In spring 1792, United States Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson proposed a design competition to solicit designs for the Capitol and the "President's House".After a heated design competition, construction on the Capitol building began in 1793. And while it has been burned and rebuilt, the building's neoclassical style—inspired by buildings in ancient Greece and Rome that guided the nation’s founders as they framed their new republic—has remained consistent.
